Descriptions of each session and workshop:

Media distribution today and in the future

This keynote presentation will outline the current status of over the top media distribution. Distribution formats and business aspects will be covered. The speaker is Marcus Linden from the major Swedish broadcaster TV4. He is responsible for the TV4 Play service and Content delivery for the TV4 group.

Value networks and business models of future media distribution

This session will outline the current situation regarding market and traffic growth in the area of media distribution over the Internet. Current actors and business models will be discussed, as well as projections for the future. Challenges regarding collaboration and possible solutions will be discussed.

Information-Centric Networking for Future Media Distribution

Information-Centric Networking is a technology that provides access to named data — such as media content items — as a native network service, aiming at higher efficiency and better security than today’s connection-based distribution mechanisms.

This session will feature presentations on how Information-Centric Networking can be beneficial for media distribution. Fundamental ICN concept as well as specific approaches will be presented, and the speakers will share their views on the potential and challenges of applying ICN to media distribution.

When is it time to deploy?

A panel on the commercial outlook and opportunities. When is the time to deploy a solution for Future Media Distribution? A panel with representatives from operators, vendors and the media industry will discuss and provide their view on when you should implement and launch a solution based on Information Centric Networks.

Workshop: How to measure user experience of IP-based media services in relation to business models

In a panel discussion format we will discuss how to measure user experience (Quality of Experience) for IP-based media services. The number of over-the-top media services are increasing rapidly, and all actors involved want to ensure a good end user experience of the services.  Special attention will be given to the fact that the actors in the media distribution typically has access to a subset of the measurement data from applications and the network, but usually do not share this data with the other actors. We will discuss how data potentially can be shared and how the user experience can be improved. We will discuss business models, Quality of Experience measurement methods, and how measurement data potentially can be shared between the actors.

Workshop: Content demand measurement and estimation

Efficient media distribution over internet relies on storing content in caches close to the consumer to avoid overload on central media servers and other core network resources. What to store in caches of limited size, and for how long depends on the demand for each unit of content. For this reason, studies of demand patterns is interesting for both network operators and content distributors. Using such information we can e.g. decide where and what type of caches to place in the network, and when to store what where. Ideally we would like to understand these patterns well enough to be able to automatically classify content based on measured demand. Given such classification, and any other that we can extract from content meta-data we should be able to project future demand for each given unit of content, and for different demographics. In this seminar we will explore some state of the art results on media content consumption patterns for three different scenarios (IPTV, Facebook and YouTube) and one perspective on why this important to the industry.

Workshop: Regulatory aspects of Future Networks and Future Media Distribution

What are the needs and possibilities of regulations of future networks and future media distribution? To this workshop we invite anyone interested in the regulatory aspects, and especially individuals representing regulatory bodies. Within the SAIL project similar workshops have been held in Finland and Portugal. Findings and questions from the project will be presented, and the future outlook from a regulatory aspect will be jointly discussed.
