Scalable and Adaptive Internet Solutions (SAIL)

25 Partners: A strong industry-led consortium of leading operators, vendors and research institutions

Leading telecommunication operators, vendors, and research institutions collaborate in a strong, industry-led consortium to develop the Networks of the Future. A consortium of 25 operators, vendors and research institutions started on August 1st, 2010, the large EU-funded research project SAIL (Scalable & Adaptive Internet Solutions) aiming at designing architectures for the Networks of the Future, as part of the European Commission’s 7th Framework Program. ‘New Business Models and Business Dynamics of the Future Networks’, further one SAIL deliverable available

The document New Business Models and Business Dynamics of the Future Networks, a public deliverable from the SAIL project, is now available from the list of deliverables.

From the executive summary:

One objective of the SAIL project is to analyse the socio-economic impact of the new, Future
Internet related technical concepts. This work has been divided into several stages. In the first
stage, the high-level business analysis of the new technical concepts was carried out and
recorded in the deliverable ‘Business analysis for use case scenarios’ (D.A.1). In this second
stage, the deeper analysis of the three socio-economic aspects of the Future Internet, i.e. the
Intangible Aspects, Business Aspects, and Regulatory Aspects, is carried out. The results of
this of work have been recorded in this document.

NetInf and OConS architectures available now

The first architecture deliverables of NetInf and OConS are now available in our web site. Take your time to read about the proposed concepts and technology solutions SAIL has come up with.

Capacity sharing workshop – invitation and call for contributions

SAIL is co-organizing a workshop around Capacity Sharing together with NEC Laboratories Europe and the Institute of Communication Networks and Computer Engineering (IKR) of the University of Stuttgart.

The workshop takes place in Stuttgart on Thursday, October 13, 2011. Deadline for contributions is July 15, 2011. Registration to the workshop is open until September15, 2011.

From the invitation:

With the increasing amount of IP traffic in fixed and mobile access networks, the question how to share the available resources in a fair, efficient and demand-oriented way becomes more and more prevalent. With the variety of services one can find in today’s Internet, the requirements in rate, data volume and latency differ strongly.
The objective of this workshop is to bring together stakeholders of mobile and fixed access networks, the classic Internet world and of the application and transport community. We solicit presentations on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas.

Second quarterly newsletter from SAIL

The second quarterly newsletter from SAIL is now available. You can download the newsletter here (link).

In the newsletter you will find an overview of the achievements and activities within the SAIL project during the last quarter. In the “under the spotlight” section in this issue we highlight the work carried out in the work-package Impact and Collaboration Enabling (WP-A), especially around the project wide scenarios that has been developed and a look into some of the dissemination activities.

SAIL Scenarios and Use Cases deliverable available

The document Description of project wide scenarios and use cases, a public deliverable from the SAIL project, is now available from the list of deliverables.

From the executive summary:

Main objectives
In order to guide and facilitate the forthcoming work within SAIL a number of scenarios and use cases are described and analyzed. The work package scenarios and use cases are meant to guide the architecture development by providing some challenging scenarios as well as to promote the innovations expected from the work packages by providing some compelling examples.

Approach
From three dimensions (video, mobility and flash crowd), that are viewed to be of major importance for future networks, a base scenario is established. Each work package has, using the three dimensions and the base scenario, identified in total six scenarios. From these six scenarios a total of 21 use cases are derived. The scenarios and use cases are described and analyzed from both a technical and business perspective.

SAIL Exploitation and Dissemination Plan deliverable available

The document Exploitation and Dissemination Plan, a public deliverable from the SAIL project, is now available from the list of deliverables.

From the executive summary:

The purpose of the present document is to present the exploitation and dissemination perspectives in detail, listing the planned activities.  This listing is a first approach to the problem, i.e., it is natural that during the development of the project, some of this information may change.  Still, all goals will remain valid, and the consortium as a whole will be in charge of implementing them.
Concerning dissemination activities, the following are planned, and presented in detail: Public Website, Press Release, Leaflet, Newsletter, Papers in Conferences and Journals, Participation in Target Events , SAIL Workshops, Demonstration Event, SAIL Training School, Interaction with other Projects and Fora, Web2.0 Activities.
Exploitation activities are also addressed in detail, being structured along several dimensions, i.e.: the actor (i.e., industrial and academic), the type (technical improvements or strategic guidelines), and the audience (internally to the  consortium and or externally to a wider community).  Furthermore, specific plans for each partner are also presented.
