Scalable and Adaptive Internet Solutions (SAIL)

25 Partners: A strong industry-led consortium of leading operators, vendors and research institutions

Leading telecommunication operators, vendors, and research institutions collaborate in a strong, industry-led consortium to develop the Networks of the Future. A consortium of 25 operators, vendors and research institutions started on August 1st, 2010, the large EU-funded research project SAIL (Scalable & Adaptive Internet Solutions) aiming at designing architectures for the Networks of the Future, as part of the European Commission’s 7th Framework Program. SAIL at FuNeMS 2012

SAIL, together with three other FP7 projects (GEYSERS, SESERV and Euro-NF), has got the co-organised Workshop Cloud Networking – Technical and Business Challenges accepted at the Future Network & Mobile Summit (FuNeMS) 2012 in Berlin, Germany, 4-6 July.

In addition to this, two SAIL related papers has got accepted and will be presented: On Converged Multidomain Management of Connectivity in Heterogeneous Networks (Michael Soellner, Alcatel-Lucent Deutschland AG, Germany) and Cloud Networking: An Infrastructure Service Architecture for the Wide Area (Paul Murray, HP, United Kingdom).

SAIL – Cloud Networking also qualified as exhibitor at the Future Network & Mobile Summit 2012 Exhibition. In our booth, SAIL research will be showcased in  a number of technology demos from the areas of Open Connectivity Services (OConS) and Cloud Networking (CloNe).

SAIL Summer School – June 25-28, 2012, in Santander

Future Internet explained – today!

SAIL (Scalable and Adaptive Internet Solutions) has the pleasure to invite all interested students (MSc or PhD), post-doc and researchers to the SAIL Summer School.

During this week (June 25-28, 2012) you will get an unique insight in the latest research and trends around the Future Internet.

We all know Internet as an integral part of our daily lives. Internet has become a commodity, and is often viewed as a hot and modern technology. However, when you look into the technical details of how the Internet works, you find out that it is based on ideas and technologies that emerged more than 40 years ago. It is time for an upgrade!

The SAIL Summer School is open for students and researchers from all over Europe and the rest of the world. The program contains both lectures, hands-on exercises and keynote speakers. The SAIL Summer School will take place at the University of Cantabria. The program and further details are available at www.sail-project.eu/summerschool.

SAIL (Scalable and Adaptive Internet Solutions) is an EU-funded research project with 25 partners including leading ICT vendors, operators and universities. During two years SAIL has developed a number of key concepts for the Future Internet, and the SAIL Summer School gives you a unique opportunity to learn more about some of them.

In particular, we will cover topics such as Cloud Networking, Network Virtualization, Network of Information and Open Connectivity Services. The lectures will be carried out by top researchers in these areas. Additionally, there will be two keynote talks, given by reputable experts in the area.

Ph.D. students are invited to submit an extended abstract of their current research. Some contributions will be selected to be presented during a work-in-progress session. This offers an excellent opportunity for people working in these areas to exchange ideas with other colleagues on an open and informal environment. In addition, an award will be given to the best presented work.

NetInf software released

SAIL has released parts of the NetInf (Network of Information) ICN software as open source.

The package consists of different implementations of name-content binding validation algorithms for the NI URI format that SAIL members published earlier and additional protocol and NetInf router/client implementations.

The software is available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/netinf/ and is licensed under Apache-2.0.

SAIL to organise ICN panels at NOMS 2012

SAIL representatives Marcus Brunner (NEC) and Prosper Chemouil (Orange Labs) have both been invited to organise Panel Sessions on ICN at IFIP/IEEE NOMS 2012 (16-20 April 2012, Maui, Hawaii, USA).

Panel 1, April 17: Software-defined Networking. Chair: Marcus Brunner. The objective of this panel is to discuss Software-defined Networking and the impact it has for network control and management.

Panel 2, April 18: Information-Centric Network: which Impact on Network Design & Operations? Chair: Prosper Chemouil. This panel is intended to address issues in the scope of Network Operations and Management in an ICN context.

More detailed information can be found at the webpage of the panel sessions.

2nd ACM SIGCOMM workshop on Information-Centric Networking – call for papers

SAIL, together with renowned expert from the international network research community, is co-organizing the second ACM SIGCOMM workshop on Information-Centric Networking (ICN-2012) that will take place in Helsinki in August 2012.

Last year’s workshop was very successful for building a community for ICN and exchanging research results from different projects. This year’s workshop is particularly focusing on ICN architecture topics, specific algorithms and protocols as well as on results from implementations and experimentation.

The Call for Papers is available at the webpage of the workshop.

SAIL IEEE paper – top 10 most popular articles in ComSoc

The paper Content, connectivity, and cloud: ingredients for the network of the future (Preprint PDF) written by Bengt Ahlgren, Pedro A. Aranda, Prosper Chemouil, Luis M. Correia, Holger Karl, Sara Oueslati, Michael Söllner and Annikki Welin, representatives of the SAIL Project Overall Engineering Team (POET), was published in the July Issue of IEEE Communications Magazine.

The paper is on the July list of the ten most popular articles published in ComSoc periodicals viewed online, based on PDF views through IEEE Xplore.

Capacity sharing workshop held in Stuttgart

SAIL partner NEC Laboratories Europe and Universität Stuttgart have organized a workshop on Capacity Sharing that took place on October 13th 2011 in Stuttgart. Capacity sharing is currently a hot topic for network operators, in both wireless and wireline networks, and is sometimes also referred to as “congestion management”. This workshop has put some emphasis on mobile networks, which is where congestion, overload etc. is currently perceived as an urgent problem.

The workshop was a big success and was attended by about 50 representatives from major operators (such as DOCOMO, Orange, Telecom Italia, BT), vendors (such as Alcatel Lucent, Huawei, NEC), telecom consultants, and standards organizations.

The workshop covered topics such as cost models, operator requirements, specific approaches to congestion management, and application/user adaptivity.

The presentation abstracts and slides are available online at the webpage of the workshop.

Fourth quarterly newsletter from SAIL
